Creating a real world experience in the classroom based on current events will help students become more engaged, and the experience will stick out to the students more than if they were to write a paper or listen to a lecture on the same topics. Secondly, using the student names in a variety of the activities or assessment helps to include the students in the learning process. Try to find a way to include the students in the learning process in as many ways as possible. While teaching we need to be able to adjust our content and how we are teaching to adapt to how the students learn or are responding to the material.
